The Northeast Kingdom is forested with a large variety of hardwoods which we use to make our wood bowls and other products. All the wood bowls, wooden pens and other wood pieces are made at the Sanderson home and studio located in East Burke, just 2 1/2 miles north of the Village. We welcome visitors to our studio and feel free to say hello to our friendly donkeys and rabbits while you're here.

A few years ago we started with a small wood lathe that we picked up at a yard sale. It has been an interesting experience. We are completely self taught. We have improved our equipment and are learning more about turning and woodworking as we go along. We take some of the wood that would be discarded or sawed into firewood and turn it into some pretty nice pieces.

It is interesting to take a burl or other piece of wood and start to work it. When we start with a top quality log, we can usually make whatever we choose. When we start sawing or turning a piece of wood from an old rough looking tree that has stood on a fence line for over a hundred years that is when it gets interesting. The wood starts to take shape and shows us what it would like to become. We only use wood that is native to our area. Each bowl we make is one of a kind, hand turned from a single chunk of wood. Each bowl is air dried for several months to allow the bowl to move naturally as it dries. After the bowl has dried we turn it to it's final shape and finish it. We sign and date all our bowls. We figure that this wood has already lived one lifetime in the tree. If we make a good bowl from that tree it should stick around for quite a while longer. It is nice to think that our bowls will be passed down from one generation to another. Years from now someone can look at the bottom of one of our bowls and know that it came from Vermont, who made it, when it was made and the kind of wood it was made from.

East Hardwick

 White Water Gallery

White Water Gallery
629 Keene Road
East Hardwick, VT 05836

tel:  802-563-2037
email:  whitewatergalleryvt@yahoo.com
web:  http://whitewatergallery.blogspot.com

White Water Gallery showcases the work of local and regional internationally recognized artists who are living in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The name references the raging falls of the Mighty Lamoille as it carves through the village of East Hardwick. Adjacent to the Gallery is Teuscher's Antique Auto Enclave,a mini-museum of sorts that houses perhaps one of the most origanal collections of all steel antique customized cars in the northeast. There is a 1928 roadster, built up from scratch with components from the last eight decades salvaged out of the local scrap yard. This car will top 130 mph! Perhaps most unique among this collection is a home-made tractor or, in the local parlance, a Yankee Doodlebug which originally was a one ton flatbed farm truck, cut in half and shortened up: the driveshaft is eleven inches long! With this rig Teuscher gives back country tours including old logging roads, beaver ponds, old cellar holes and high meadow picnics. Double package: Cars and Art. It is my contention that cars are art as their form and design portray our American Culture. In the case of Hot Rods and customized cars there is no more pure form of sculpture that everyone can recognize as distinctly American. Hours of operation at the Gallery and the Enclave are every Sunday from 11 to 3 of during the week by appointment. A special feature for the season this year will be Car Talk, every Sunday at one o'clock noting the stories and history of these rare examples of pre-WW2 manufacturing before the idea of planned obsolescence homogenized the automobile industry.

Hardwick, VT 05843

web:  http://www.graceart.org

GRACE began in 1975 at the St. Johnsbury Convalescent Center located in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Don Sunseri, a newly transplanted artist working working at the Center, provided art materials, encouragement, and a supportive environment, letting residents explore on their own. As a result, they produced a stream of beautiful, often autobiographical art works. The art was later organized into exhibits, slide lectures and publications. Since that time hundreds of exhibits have traveled to galleries, museums, and art centers, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Today, GRACE has blossomed into a small, non-profit organization which now has a staff of five and runs more than 500 workshops annually. GRACE brings weekly artmaking workshops to the places where people live and work: nursing homes, mental health centers, senior meal sites, adult day centers, and artists' homes. GRACE has been recognized and supported as an important and original community arts program by the Vermont Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New England Foundation for the Arts, the Vermont Community Foundation and many private foundations. Smithsonian (1992) CNN Across America (1993), Vermont Life (1995), Vermont ETV (1996), Boston Globe (1998), Raw Vision (2002), and Folk Art (2007) have traveled to Vermont to highlight the GRACE program and the work of individual GRACE artists.

In September of 2000 GRACE acquired the Old Firehouse in downtown Hardwick, the first permanent facility for the organization. The Old Firehouse, built in 1885, is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. The Old Firehouse provides a bright interior space for GRACE's Firehouse Gallery, community workshops, offices, and art collections. Visitors are welcome to view and purchase a diverse selection of contemporary self-taught art.

Five years ago an eclectic group of “villagers” gathered to learn how to spin on a drop spindle. We had so much fun that monthly meetings evolved (and still happen at the Montgomery Library the first Monday of each month). Several members bought wheels, many more learned to knit, and the group expanded to include others who found joy in working with natural fibers. Our members include local farmers and fiber producers who provide most of the fleeces used in our products. Each skein of hand spun yarn and multi-fiber roving is created with care and is truly a local Vermont item!

Members of the Mountain Fiber Folk Cooperative host a unique shop & studio located in picturesque Montgomery Center, Vermont. They provide high quality products made from natural fibers. Our collection of spinning and knitting fibers, handspun (and millspun) yarns are obtained from local: Llamas, Alpacas, Colored Angora goats, Icelandic, Romney, and Cormo sheep, Angora bunnies, and Samoyed dogs!!! Not only can spinners, weavers, knitters, and fiber artists find a vast supply of materials among the hand-dyed locks, handspun yarns, and specially blended roving, but the shop also offers a beautiful collection of locally made gifts such as woven items, needle-felted critters, marvelous fiber dolls, and much more. Come and browse, or sit and knit (or spin) in our cozy corner. The “Folk” are always available to assist with your selection or help with your project.

Catamount Arts was founded in 1975 with a mission of enhancing the cultural climate of northern Vermont and New Hampshire. Integration of the arts into community life has been our guiding principle and we attempt to cultivate awareness and appreciation of the arts through a diversified schedule of film, music, theater, dance, and the visual arts.

For 20 years, Catamount Arts was located literally next door to one of the most beautiful and historically important buildings in the Northeast Kingdom. When it was opened in 1912, the Masonic Temple of St. Johnsbury was the largest and grandest Masonic building in the state with more than 700 members. In a generous gesture intended to benefit the entire community, the Masonic Lodge gave this showplace building to Catamount in 2005, in return for a no-cost lease in perpetuity of the top floor, which continues to be used as the Lodge meeting place.

Catamount Arts then embarked on a major construction project to transform the lower two floors into a Community Arts Building. The rehabilitation was designed with the help and encouragement of the local community. Not only were the actual plans developed after a series of public creative forums, but much of the rehabilitation work was done by the St. Johnsbury Academy Building Trades and Electricity Programs and the St. Johnsbury Work Camp participants.

Catamount’s role as the Northeast Kingdom’s primary source of arts and culture vastly expanded with the ribbon cutting on October 4, 2008. The new Community Arts Building features two movie theaters, allowing Catamount Arts to present a regular schedule of acclaimed foreign-language and independent films; two state-of-the-art classrooms, which are used for art, computer and music education; an 80-seat performance space dedicated to regular performances by local artists; and a gallery showcasing local and area artists' work.

Catamount annually presents an extensive series of performances at venues throughout Vermont's Northeast Kingdom bringing in nationally known touring artists as well as accomplished local performers.

Hours: 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Monday - Saturday. In addition, the galleries are available to visitors before and after the nightly film screenings.
