Trails and Tails

Bring boots and bikes to explore the Kingdom's hills and valleys this summer. For mountain bikers, Kingdom Trails boasts miles and miles of single track excitement - the #1 mountain bike destination in the Northeast. You'll cruise through breathtaking fields, crest over stunning views, and plunge into lush hollows, all maintained through this cooperative of private landowners.
More comfortable on the road? Let your spirit soar as you pedal through glorious countryside on circuits that range from kind to punishing. A free Biking Road Map is available from the Northeast Kingdom Travel and Tourism Association. Don't miss the Tour de Kingdom (www.tourdekingdom.org) on June 16.
Hardwick Trails offer a glimpse of local scenery at a pace that can be enjoyed by the whole family. This network of walking trails is maintained by neighbors and offers an insider's view of indigenous plants and area wildlife. Check out their Birding Walk on June 3rd, Nature Sketching program on June 9th, and Nordic Walking on June 23rd -- details can be seen on travelthekingdom.com. In Greensboro, the Highland Lodge invites your adventurous spirit to explore the nature trails at Barr Hill or get your feet wet from the private, sandy beach along Caspian Lake.
Head to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center this month for Olympic-style sculling and rowing. Beginner and expert athletes from across the country come to hone their skills on Lake Hosmer, and world-class instruction is available if you are just starting out or looking to improve your strength and practice. Canoe and kayak enthusiasts can paddle along the ancient path of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, which meanders through the northern reaches of the Kingdom. Set your own pace and bring a picnic to extend the day on the river - you'll discover reasons to come back again and again.
For a close look at the natural world, spend an afternoon at the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium, northern New England's premier museum of natural history. This "cultural and historic gem" was founded in 1891 and includes animals and artifacts, a weather center, plus Vermont's only public planetarium. This June, the museum will feature Trees of New England on June 16th-20th and Pasture and Meadow: Wildflowers and Their Pollinators on June 23rd-24th. Summer programs include "Fridays at Fairbanks" activities for families.
Dog Mountain, Stephen Huneck's playful monument to 4-legged companions, welcomes "all creeds and all breeds." A network of paths crisscross the rolling hills on the Huneck's 400-acre farm, graced with sculpture that evokes this artist's devotion to dogs of all sizes. He says, "It is a wonderful experience to go on a walk with your dog through an old forest, you will see how the dog becomes fully alert, your guide and protector." There is always a good supply of treats in the gallery - for both dogs and their people.
