The Northeast Kingdom's historic downtowns, charming villages and creative cottage industries offer a stimulating variety of shopping experiences.
In some of our larger towns, you can still go "downtown" for a pleasant afternoon of browsing or for a real shopping blowout. Historic buildings, pleasant cafes, convenient parking and a small town atmosphere can turn any shopping excursion into a nostalgic experience.
Our country stores have traditionally supplied local residents with much more than the mere physical necessities of life. It is in these buildings, many over a century old, that neighbors and old friends meet to catch up on events, transact business and solve the world's problems. No shopping trip in the Kingdom is complete without a visiting a country market where you can be sure of finding just that thing you were looking for - or that item you never knew you needed!
If you're fortunate (or you check the local papers) you may also happen onto a local auction, church bazaar or seasonal yard sale. Vermonters have a high regard for quality and authenticity, but they have an even higher regard for good value and their own communities. These less formal shopping venues are popular places for bargain hunting, socializing and passing a pleasant afternoon.
